Melvin

Melvin is our fifth, (and hopefully for a long time, last) feline addition to the Perryman household. He started out as a weekly outdoor visitor to our home in the spring of 2008, and we had him vaccinated and neutered through the TNR program of Forgotten Felines of Forsyth. Unlike his lookalike brother Marvin, Melvin has always been a friendly fellow, and loves to play with people.

One recent afternoon I was out at the barnyard, feeding the masses when I heard a mewing from the woods. At first I thought it was one of our semi-feral barn kitties, as they like to have a late afternoon talk session in the woods. But luckily I chose not to ignore it, and discovered an orange and white source of the meow - some 30 feet up in a tree! Melvin was stuck in a very tall poplar tree, one that had been struck by lightning this past summer. We tried several ways to get him down, but he was stuck for almost two days until a true feline rescue hero arrived at our house after dark, bringing with her a 40' ladder and a "miner's cap" (hat with lights). Although she is afraid of heights, she climbed the wobbling ladder and delivered Melvin to safety!

Melvin is now a house cat. At first he was not real sure that he liked being a house cat, and had a few "accidents". But now that I have seven litter boxes in the house, and I try to keep Lucille from picking on him too much, he seems much happier. He even participates in the 4 am Kitty Olympics and loves to play with everything.
