Stella

Stella is our first cat. She selected Melissa as her human in October 2001, when she appeared at SciWorks Science Center where Melissa used to work. Melissa didn't know that she was a cat person until Stella adopted her. Stella has taught us almost everything that we know about cats.

Stella is sweet, affectionate and friendly with most humans. She jumps up to get a pet on the head (it looks like a dolphin rolling in the ocean), and is a great lap kitty. Although she rarely meows, she appears to have quite a bit of Siamese or Oriental in her heritage, and is the only one of our cats who has enjoyed walking on a harness and leash.

Stella's right ear is missing its tip and she had already been spayed when she adopted Melissa. This remained a mystery for years until we learned about feral cat spay and neuter projects, which trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release feral (wild) cats in order to cut down on the out-of-control breeding of homeless cats. Ear-tipping or ear-notching is a way that these organizations can determine at a glance if the cat has already been spayed or neutered. I think that Stella was probably raised around people, but was not given a stable home and so she had to fend for herself for a while before claiming her territory with us. She is now content to live a life indoors, away from potential dangers such as cars.
